Virginia Satir was known as a Therapist with her influence in being a pioneer of family therapy. Satir is known as the ‘mother of family therapy’ and created techniques still used to this day to include role plays, sculpting, and the temperature reading.
In 1977, Satir created ‘Satir Family Camp’ (SFC) which brought families together to live together in the wilderness for one week each year and our very own, Calvin Graham gets to attend! 🙂
Calvin, this sounds so freaking cool. How did you hear about Satir Family Camp (SFC)?
I heard about family campy from different professors and my mentor. One of my mentor’s has been a facilitator of family for a number of years. And Yes, it is super cool. I am so excited and so anxious at the same time.
What are some of the biggest takeaways you are looking to get out of SFC?
It is my hope that family camp allows me to not only become a better relational therapist, but a better member of my respected families. I also hope to take advantage of experiencing life in a way that I may never experience again.
Is there a daily schedule of events/sessions? If so, what does a typical day look like?
There is a daily schedule so every morning will begin with a temperature reading at 9:00am. After everyone’s temperature reading, the morning sessions will begin promptly at 12:30pm and afternoon sessions begin from 2:30 to 5:30pm. Also each night there are different events such as skit night or party night.
Where is SFC held?
Family camp is held in California on a Mountain!
It sounds like it is a community of therapists coming together.. What do you think your role will look like at SFC?
I am excited to assist Dr. Haber and Dr. Cooper-Haber in all of their needs while there. I am also preparing to run a group for some of the teens while there.
Finally, when are you headed out!? And what will the office do without you!?
I will be leaving the 22nd of June and will not be returning back to the office the 5th of July. I am so excited for this opportunity and will miss my CAS family!i
